Many vehicles fitted with the Plastic Cam Pulleys (V5-V9 Exhaust Pulleys, V5-V6 RH Inlet Pulley) are now suffering from drastic and often catastrophic failure on these pulleys, some of them are 22+ Years old now.
Here at RCM we have developed our own Alloy version of these pulleys, removing this problem of fatigue and almost certainly will outlast the car they are fitted to.
The 2.0 Liter, non-AVCS EJ20 engine that came in the 2002 - 2005 WRX came with one metal cam gear on the drivers side intake cam, but the rest of the OEM gears are made of composite plastic.
For OEM applications, or even mild to moderate power, these factory cam gears are perfectly adequate. However if you start to make a lot more power, want to rev the engine higher, and especially if you go with a more aggressive cam that has higher lift that requires a stiffer spring, those composite plastic gears can be a liability.
For many high power applications, the only option is to switch out all 4 cam gears with adjustable gears that also happen to be metal. Roger Clark Motorsport has a lot of experience building high power non-AVCS engines, so they developed a set of adjustable gears for this exact reason.
However, they also recently realized those adjustable gears come with a bit of complexity, and that there were some customers that didn't need or want the ability to adjust cam timing, they just wanted the reliability of a metal cam gear.
So they designed an aluminum cam gear set that replaced all of the factory composite plastic cam gears with much more durable metal ones which is going to be significantly more durable and reliable than the OEM composite plastic gear, but it also has the same simplicity of install as the factory gear.
This kit is a must for any high rpm, high power builds without AVCS, and this is especially true if you are using any aftermarket cams that have higher lift.
